New River Ferry, Invercargill: Rural Area Guide to River and Estuary Country

Last updated October 2026

New River Ferry is a rural locality in Invercargill City, spread along Otatara Road on the western approach to the city. The name belongs to the New River, the local name for the lower Ōreti where it nears Invercargill and the New River Estuary. There is no village centre and no ferry to catch.

Houses, lifestyle blocks and small farms sit on open country rather than a suburban street grid. Sandy Point and Oreti Beach are a short drive away, and Invercargill is a straightforward run by car for shops, work and schools.

About New River Ferry

New River Ferry is countryside inside the Invercargill City boundary, not a town with its own main street. Otatara Road is the road used in local addresses, with a scatter of side roads serving houses and small holdings.

Sections are larger than in the urban suburbs, and daily life is car-based. People come here for space beside the river country, not for a walkable row of shops.

The Ōreti is one of Southland’s main rivers. Around Invercargill and the estuary it is still called the New River, a name sometimes used for the river as a whole. The official name was altered to Ōreti River in November 2019.

The Ministry for Culture and Heritage gives Ōreti as “place of the snare”. The river shares the New River Estuary with the Waihopai River. Heritage New Zealand describes that estuary as the largest in Murihiku, and as a traditional route from coastal settlements into the interior of Te Waipounamu.

The estuary was also the earliest port serving Invercargill, and the main port south of Dunedin before a port was established at Campbell Town, now Bluff. A bar at the mouth made the entrance difficult, and a pilot station watched the channel.

The Port of Invercargill Jetty, on the south side of Stead Street on the city side of the estuary, is the surviving structure from that trade. It was commissioned in 1859 and completed around 1861, and is a Category 2 historic place. It is not in this locality, but it explains why the New River mattered to the young city.

Mana whenua relationships for Invercargill City Council are with Te Rūnanga o te Awarua and Waihōpai Rūnaka, within Ngāi Tahu. The wider city takes its Māori name, Waihōpai, from the river that joins the Ōreti in the estuary.

New River Ferry has no marae or public cultural centre of its own. Its identity is the river crossing recorded in the place name, and the quiet rural land that grew up once the road replaced the boat.

Getting Around

Plan to drive. Otatara Road is the local access. Ferry Road and Dunns Road are the other named roads in this western part of the district. Dunns Road is the main route through Ōtātara and continues across the Ōreti toward Oreti Beach.

Ferry Road is carried by a single-lane bridge, 85 metres long, built in 1939 and classed by the council as an access route. Give way carefully on that bridge.

Invercargill’s public buses leave from the BusSmart terminus on Tay Street. The urban network is three through-routes: Waikiwi to Newfield, Hargest to Clifton, and Waverley to Kingswell.

Council transport planning covers those city services and has not funded a regular service to Ōtātara or Bluff. This locality is not on the city bus network. Winter driving on Southland roads can be wet and windy, so allow extra time if you are heading on to the beach.

History and Heritage

The place name is the record of the crossing. No public ferry appears in the city’s transport network, and nothing in the council’s roading plans describes a boat service here now.

What the asset record does show is the Ferry Road bridge of 1939, the road replacement on that approach to the river. Dunns Road has its own later bridge, built in 1987, on the route west toward the beach.

The deeper history sits on the water. Ships once used the New River Estuary because it was the harbour for Invercargill. The bar, the pilot station and the Stead Street jetty all belong to that story.

The jetty is privately listed, so treat it as a heritage landmark to understand, not as a public wharf to wander. For the living river, the local name New River and the official name Ōreti are both still heard.

Getting Outdoors

New River Ferry is not a beach settlement, but the coast is the reason the roads run this way. The New River Estuary, Sandy Point and Oreti Beach are the three places people drive to from this side of the city.

Sandy Point is a coastal sand-dune complex between the estuary and Foveaux Strait. Oreti Beach is the long strand at the end of Dunns Road. Ōtātara’s remnant tōtara forest has short bush walks if you want shelter from the wind.

The estuary is tidal, with soft margins, and its mouth was long known as a difficult bar. It is a place to look at from the shore, or to use only with local knowledge on the water. It is not a patrolled swimming beach.

Oreti Beach is the ocean option nearby. Check the weather and the tide before you go, and do not treat either shore as a casual swim from this locality.
