No tides here: rain in the hills colours and lifts the river, and low, clear summer water makes the trout harder to catch.
Setting and Background
The Waikaia rises in the Umbrella Mountains and flows south to the Mataura at Riversdale. Its headwaters are remote and hard to reach. The water there runs cool and clear out of swamp and tussock country. Downstream of Piano Flat the river opens out across farmland, with glides, deep pools and riffles that are easy to wade.
Lower down the river can colour after rain and turns more tea-stained close to the Mataura, so much of the fishing there is blind. The Dome Burn and Steeple Burn are spawning streams for the whole Mataura system, and trout move into the tributaries early in the season.
Waikaia village, 54 km north of Gore, grew from gold mining. Piano Flat, at the southern end of the Waikaia Forest Conservation Area, has been a camping spot since the Bunting family first camped there in 1928, and anglers helped make it popular. Ngāi Tahu hold a nohoanga site beside the campsite for access to customary fishing areas.
How to Fish the Waikaia River
The beat system
Fish & Game Southland runs a voluntary beat system on the main river. Each beat has a signpost and its own car park. Park at your chosen beat and fish only inside its boundaries; a vehicle at the sign tells other anglers the beat is taken.
If you are not leaving a vehicle there, put a note on the sign with the date, time and your plans. You may fish an occupied beat downstream of, that is behind, the angler already on it. Tributaries are not part of the system.
The open reaches
- Piano Flat Open Reach: beside the campsite at the top of the farmland water.
- Waikaia Township Open Reach: 5.4 km around the village.
- Mahers Beach Open Reach: 3.4 km.
- Waipounamu Bridge Open Reach: 0.7 km.
Normal angler etiquette applies on the open reaches, and anglers on the beats either side may fish into them. The beat boundaries are on the Fish & Game Southland access map.
When
Wading is easiest in summer. The fish are good sized but hard to catch when the river is low and clear, and hard to spot except in long dry spells and bright light.
What to use
- Nymphs: Pheasant Tail, Hare’s Ear and Hare and Copper; Willow Grubs in late summer when grubs are falling.
- Dry flies: Parachute Adams, March Brown, Kakahi Queen, Goddard’s Caddis and Dad’s Favourite.
- Wet flies: small hackled wee wets swung through the riffles.
- Spinners: very small Veltic or Mepps blades, or small Rapalas that look like juvenile trout.
- Gear: a 5 to 7 weight fly rod and a leader of about 12 feet.
Downstream, the Waikaia joins the Mataura, which has its own beats and access: see our Mataura River guide.
