What ERO found

The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a School Report from August 2026. ERO found that achievement is low: under half of the children are at the expected curriculum level for their year in reading and maths, and under a third are in writing, which ERO rated as needing improvement.

Achievement, progress, reading, maths and equity were rated as working towards, though progress is getting better, especially for older children in reading and writing, and boys’ writing is a particular concern.

ERO judged the school to be doing well in its other areas, including attendance, which is improving with less chronic absence, a caring and settled school where children feel they belong, more te reo Māori, tikanga and local Kāi Tahu stories woven into learning, well-organised support for children with additional needs, and leaders and a board who use information well to set priorities.

ERO found one compliance gap: the board must make sure non-teaching and unregistered staff are Police vetted every three years. ERO was confident the school can make the improvements it set out.

ERO’s next steps are to speed up progress and lift achievement for every child with fairer results across groups, to help children take a more active part in their learning through goal setting, reflection and acting on feedback, to sharpen how assessment information shapes teaching, and to keep working to raise regular attendance.
