What ERO found

The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a Te Ara Huarau School Profile Report from June 2023. It sets out an improvement evaluation that ERO and the school agreed to carry out on how well teachers use assessment information to guide their teaching, speed up progress in literacy and numeracy and narrow gaps between groups of learners.

The school had recently adopted a new assessment plan after working with outside professional learning providers. ERO noted that teachers have been trained in the new assessment tools, that the revised plan has made assessment more consistent across the school and is starting to shape learning programmes, and that teachers know their students well and keep a close watch on the progress of priority groups.

The school’s priorities from the report are to keep building staff skill in gathering, analysing and using good-quality assessment information, and to evaluate its student support programmes and interventions to learn which ones are working and which are not.

Enrolling

Southland Adventist Christian School is state-integrated and runs an enrolment scheme. Its website says preference goes to families with a connection to the school’s special character, either active Seventh-day Adventist families or other committed Christian families who want a Christian education, and that preference is decided by the local church pastor, the school chaplain or their delegate.

A small number of non-preference places exist, and families taking one must accept the school’s special character and take part in its programme.

Compulsory attendance dues set by the Proprietor apply. Non-preference applicants who cannot be offered a place straight away can join a waiting list, and the school invites families to book a tour.
